It’s probably not a surprise that the New Year is the busiest time of the year for Divorce Solicitors. The stresses of Christmas can cause many couples to reach their breaking point. Christmas itself isn’t always the reason so many couples call it quits after the festive season. Some of the reasons for divorce at this time of year may surprise you – letโ€™s take a closer look into them.

ย ‘Tis the season for a steep rise in divorce rates – but what are the reasons for divorce at this time of year?

The period in the run-up to Christmas can often be a stressful one, and it is thought that added financial pressures and family tensions over Christmas are often the main reasons why a relationship breaks down during this period.

Interestingly though, for many couples, Christmas has nothing to do with their reason for divorce. Christmas is actually the reason many couples choose to stay together. In our experience, clients have been known to delay their divorce to spend one last Christmas as a family for the sake of their children.

The festive season can be intense, and it can put immense pressure on marriages. The strain of gift giving, finances, and spending time with extended family often puts a marriage into question.

Whatever the reason, it is a well known fact that divorce rates increase in the New Year, once life reverts back to normality.

Tips to help you and your partner survive the festive season.

Money stresses are one of the leading causes of divorce at any time of the year, this multiplies at Christmas time when everyone is spending and partying more than usual. We advise that you sit down as a couple and agree on a financial budget together. This budget can be for a Christmas night out, or your Christmas shopping. Being on the same page and communicating about money ahead of time will prevent any unnecessary arguments.

Try and make a conscious effort to remain calm during silly arguments. When we spend more time with someone in close proximity, tension can build. If you feel yourself getting worked up, take a moment to yourself to take a deep breath and calm yourself. Nothing positive comes from lashing out and shouting.

If spending time with extended family tends to cause arguments between you and your partner, try and keep visiting times to a minimum. If you are already committed, try and break up the day with a walk or plan a period where you can have a little break or time to yourself. Don’t forget, a little effort goes a long way and your partner will most likely love seeing you being present and really trying with their family.
